Medical foods are a class of nutritional products that the manufacturers are allowed by the FDA to make claims. Medical foods are not approved by the FDA as a drug is, but the manufacturer must be able provide research to support the claims made.
Here is FDA?s definition of a medical food:
The term medical food, as defined in section 5(b) of the Orphan Drug Act (21 U.S.C. 360ee (b) (3)) is ?a food which is formulated to be consumed or administered enterally under the supervision of a physician and which is intended for the specific dietary management of a disease or condition for which distinctive nutritional requirement, based on recognized scientific principles, are established by medical evaluation.?
In order to market a medical food a company is not required to get approval from FDA but they are required to follow the regulations which involve meeting FDA?s definition for a medical food and having supporting research for claims.
Each of these medical foods has a stated purpose. However, most of these medical foods are quite similar, but the more expensive products have added nutrients designed to meet the more demanding needs of more sensitive people. The Metagenics'' UltraClear products start with a base product,Ultra Clear and each subsequent product in the series has been designed to meet the needs of those who may be more impaired or sensitive. Ultra Clear Plus Ph for example is designed to treat the most sensitive of people. Ultra Clear Plus is similar, but without the pH balancing found in Ultra Clear Plus pH. Basic Ultraclear does not have the extra phase II detoxification support that Ultraclear Plus has, and subsequently some people that have an unbalanced detoxification system may not tolerate UltraClear, but will do nicely on Ultra Clear Plus.
